New York.- Summer in New York City is no joke. Between the sweltering subway rides and the relentless heat of the sidewalks, staying cool is not just a matter of comfort, but of safety. Fortunately, the city is deploying significant resources to help New Yorkers cool off, from more than 60 free public pools to hundreds of cooling centers. Outdoor pools are open every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in all five boroughs, with a cleaning break between 3 and 4 p.m. Entry is free, but on hot days lines can be long, so it's best to arrive early, stay hydrated, and check the dress code before you go. Indoor pools are available year-round. Membership fees are quite affordable: they are free for those under 24 years old, and for adults aged 25 to 61 they cost $150 per year, while seniors (62+), veterans, and people with disabilities only pay $25 annually. NYC Parks also offers free swimming lessons for almost all ages, from toddlers 18 months old to seniors. Spots fill up quickly, so it's important to check availability online early in the season.

Before Swimming: Check the Weather and Protect Your Skin

The weather in NYC during the summer can change rapidly. Thunderstorms, UV alerts, or air quality warnings can affect your plans. Always consult the National Weather Service (NWS-NY) or the NBC forecast before going out. And there are no excuses for not using sunscreen. Sun protection is non-negotiable, whether you're going to the pool, the beach, or just walking the dog. Reapply frequently, wear a hat, and consider clothing with UV protection if you'll be outdoors for a long time.

NYC Cooling Centers and Spray Showers

When the temperature becomes unbearable, NYC opens more than 500 cooling centers: air-conditioned spaces in community centers, libraries, and senior centers, where anyone can cool off for free. Call 311 or use the online cooling center finder. Some are reserved for seniors, so check before you go. Spray showers and other public water sources are also a fun and free way to cool off, especially for children. You can find them in playgrounds, plazas, and in temporary installations on the streets. Remember that opening fire hydrants is not allowed unless done by the NYC Fire Department (FDNY). Besides being illegal, it is dangerous and wastes water essential for emergencies.

Never Leave Children or Pets in the Car

This tip can save lives: a car can turn into an oven in a matter of minutes. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the temperature inside a vehicle can increase by 40°F in less than an hour, even if it's only 70°F outside. Most of this heating occurs in the first 15 to 30 minutes, and opening the windows or parking in the shade does not offer enough relief. If you are going to run errands, leave children and pets at home or take them with you.

Heat Stroke Prevention

Whether you work outdoors, are traveling, or simply walking, hyperthermia (excessive body heat) poses a real risk. That's why it's essential to take precautions. Stay constantly hydrated with water, electrolyte drinks, or fruit infusions, and avoid coffee and alcohol. Use curtains and open the windows at night to let the breeze in. Wear light and breathable clothing such as cotton or linen. Try to run your errands outside of the hottest hours, between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. If you start to feel dizzy, nauseous, or excessively sweaty, seek shade or go into a cool place. Summer in New York can be wonderful without the need to sweat too much, thanks to all the resources available to keep you cool and safe. The city has it all: from free pools and cooling centers, to helpful tips on hydration and energy use. It's all about planning well, respecting the heat, and taking advantage of what the city offers. You only need your towel, a water bottle, and sunscreen to enjoy the season while staying cool, safe, and also taking care of others.
