Santo Domingo, D.R. — The national deputy of the Christian Democratic Quisqueyan Party (PQDC), Elías Wessin, called on President Luis Abinader and former presidents Leonel Fernández, Danilo Medina and Hipólito Mejía to consider the seriousness of the occupation of Haitian nationals in protected areas of Monte Plata province, specifically in El Pino de Pilancón, within Los Haitises National Park.

Wessin warned that foreigners are settling in peaks, hills, and mountains of the park, causing serious depredation of the ecosystem. “It is a zone of high environmental value that must be protected from all illegal human intervention,” he expressed in a speaking turn in the ordinary session of the Chamber of Deputies this Tuesday.

Likewise, the legislator drew attention to the growing threat posed by armed gangs in Haiti, whose attacks on communities have caused a massive displacement of people towards the border with the Dominican Republic.

“At that summit, we hope that concrete actions will be outlined to avoid and/or confront a stampede towards Dominican territory,” said Wessin, referring to the high-level discussions that will take place between the President of the Republic and the three former presidents regarding the Haitian situation and its implications for national security.

The congressman insisted on the need to reinforce immigration and environmental policies to safeguard both the sovereignty and the natural resources of the country.
