As part of the initiative, an existing 2,165-meter runway is being rehabilitated, which will have a lighting and signaling system certified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States. The work, carried out by the Airport Department, will be completed by October of this year. Furthermore, a state-of-the-art control tower is being built, 30 meters high, equipped with a pre-assembled cabin and encrypted communication systems. According to Rodriguez, this structure will be ready in August and has been designed to withstand winds equivalent to Category 5 hurricanes, according to the Saffir-Simpson scale. The project also includes the installation of an alternative electrification system to guarantee the energy supply to both the control tower and the runway, which will allow maintaining operability even in adverse conditions. With these improvements, the San Isidro Air Base is consolidated as a strategic point for the civil and military aviation of the country, capable of responding to emergencies and strengthening national air security.
