Leaders from more than 20 countries met this Monday in the Chinese city of Tianjin for the 25th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). At the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO, the leaders discussed the main areas of cooperation and development of the organization and stressed the need to push for the formation of a just and equitable multipolar world.

"Global governance" During his speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed creating a "more just and equitable global governance system" and highlighted that the SCO "has increasingly become a catalyst for the development and reform of the global governance system." Xi explained that a new global governance system is necessary because "the Cold War mentality, hegemony, and protectionism" continue to "torment the world." The Chinese leader listed the five principles on which he wants to base the future global governance system: sovereign equality; respect for international law; multilateralism; a people-centered approach and the need to take concrete action. For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the SCO could take the lead in the process of forming a more just global governance system. The Russian leader assured that Moscow supports Beijing's initiative, adding that Russia is already ready to begin discussing concrete proposals. "Precisely, the SCO could take the lead in efforts to create a more just and equitable global governance system, which would be based on the primacy of international law and on the fundamental provisions of the United Nations Charter. It would be truly balanced and would take into account the interests of the largest possible number of countries, guaranteeing opportunities for their sustainable development and security," he stressed.
