Deputies socialize bill that seeks to create a facial recognition biometric data bank

Santo Domingo.- The Permanent Commission of Public Ministry met with representatives from different institutions to hear their opinion on the bill that creates the Database for Biometric Facial Recognition, Fingerprint and Palm Print Registry of Dominican and Foreign Citizens residing in the Country. The proponent of the legislative initiative, Congressman Carlos Sánchez, offered some motivations on the importance of the bill for a better security of the Dominican Republic.

“It is not possible that we do not have a biometric facial recognition database by law. While it is true that the Central Electoral Board has a database for the issue of identification and other situations, but as a Law we do not have a record that both the Dominican citizen and the one who enters the country can know who is here” Sánchez specified.

Of the guests, the first to state their position was Luis Soto, director of the Intelligence Department DNI, who stated that he agreed with the initiative, assuring that it is a matter of great interest for national security.

“For the ID card, this is a matter of interest; we see it as a matter of national security, and we have had a meeting with the proposing deputy on the project,” said Luis Soto.

While Malaquías Contreras, representing the president of the Junta Central Electoral, Román Jáquez Liranzo, requested that the members of the Commission be granted a period for the technicians to present a position before the plenary of the organization, stating their position in this regard.

Fernando Quezada García, representing the Attorney General of the Republic, Jenny Berenice Reynoso, after defending the purpose of the initiative, promised to send in writing, after discussing with the attorney, some recommendations on the bill.
