Santo Domingo. - Time expert Jean Suriel reported this Wednesday that, along with the month of October, the stage of left-handed cyclones in the Caribbean and storms and hurricanes with atypical and unusual trajectories has begun.

According to the report, the "left-handed cyclones" stage, sudden atmospheric phenomena with a trajectory opposite to what we usually see in the rest of the season.

October is the fifth month of the hurricane season in the Atlantic and in the coming months tropical activity shifts towards the Caribbean, increasing the risk of storm and hurricane formation near the Dominican Republic.

To form both west-southwest of the Caribbean Sea and in the Gulf of Mexico or south of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico: in the past, several left-handed meteorological systems have affected the Dominican Republic, leaving significant damage and loss of life.

TORMENTA ODETTE 2003:
This phenomenon formed on December 4th, 20 years ago, from a low-pressure system north of Colombia, in the waters of the Caribbean Sea, developing a trajectory towards the Dominican Republic where it made impact on December 6th.

HURRICANE MATTHEW 2016:
The phenomenon strengthened north of Venezuela and just north of Colombia it became stationary, until reaching category 5; then, it developed a route towards Haiti (where it left hundreds of deaths): it generated strong effects in DR.

HURRICANE LILI 1984:
An erratic trajectory of this system is highlighted from the North Atlantic towards the northeast of the Dominican Republic; it formed on December 12th and dissipated on the 24th (Christmas Eve) over Samaná, causing abundant rainfall in the country.

HURRICANE NOEL 2007:
Known for being a cyclone with great damage in DR without touching land in the country; it traced a very irregular route south of the country, in the Caribbean Sea, and trapped by the Central Mountain Range developed extreme floods for more than a week.
