Spain backs the coalition against drug trafficking proposed by France and Italy

The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, expressed his support this Thursday for the proposal by France and Italy to create a coalition of countries against drug trafficking in Europe. The proposal is expected to be presented at the European Political Community summit held in Copenhagen by French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Upon his arrival at the summit, Sánchez referred to this initiative regarding an issue he considered very important and about which he regretted that little is said. "We applaud this proposal and, as a Government, we join this coalition of countries in the fight against drug trafficking," he added before specifying that European collaboration already exists to tackle this scourge. Sánchez endorsed the initiative because of all the implications of the problem, whether from a health point of view due to its impact on mental health, or in the fight against the mafias that, he said, are undermining coexistence.

At the summit of the European Political Community, the Prime Minister plans to reiterate support for increased security on the eastern European flank, which he already expressed the day before at the informal meeting of the leaders of the Twenty-Seven.

But in the same way, it plans to raise with the other leaders the need to address the climate emergency as another factor affecting the security of countries. In addition to being present at the summit plenary, Sánchez will participate in a round table on traditional and new threats to security, a forum that will be co-chaired by Macron and the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama.
