COE declares red alert in nine provinces ahead of the imminent passage of storm Melissa

SANTO DOMINGO. – The Emergency Operations Center (COE) raised to red alert the provinces of Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, San Cristóbal, Peravia, Azua, Barahona, Pedernales, San José de Ocoa and San Juan de la Maguana, after a meeting headed by President Luis Abinader in the National Palace. The institution warned that these areas face a high level of danger due to the effects of tropical storm Melissa, so it recommended that residents keep their emergency kit at hand and locate themselves in safe places before and during the passage of the phenomenon.

Likewise, the provinces of La Vega, Hato Mayor, San Pedro de Macorís, Elías Piña, El Seibo, La Romana, Independencia and La Altagracia (including Saona Island) remain under yellow alert, while Bahoruco, Santiago, María Trinidad Sánchez and Samaná remain under green alert. Faced with the risk, the Government ordered the suspension of classes on Wednesday and Thursday in the provinces under red alert and reduced the working day in the morning, both in the public and private sectors, until one o'clock in the afternoon. According to the latest report from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), storm Melissa is located about 415 kilometers south/southwest of Barahona, with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and higher gusts. It is moving west at about 24 km/h, although it is expected to reduce its speed and turn towards the northwest and north in the coming hours, with the possibility of strengthening.
