The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will be discharged this Wednesday, after having undergone emergency surgery on Monday night for an incarcerated hernia, and will finally travel to Spain in February, after postponing the visit initially scheduled for this month due to his hospitalization. In statements to journalists, the president of the Board of Directors of the São João University Hospital, Maria João Baptista, indicated that the head of state, 76 years old, will be discharged "in a few hours" from that center, located in Porto, in northern Portugal. "Okay, the usual routine tests were done in this type of situation and he is in the clinical conditions we wanted, which was expected in the postoperative period; now we have to wait a little longer for the president to eat something," said Baptista.

He pointed out that Rebelo de Sousa should be careful with his diet and rest. For his part, the head of the Civil House, Fernando Frutuoso de Melo, added that the president will go directly to the Palácio de Belém, headquarters of the Portuguese Presidency, as soon as he leaves the hospital and that everything is prepared to give him the necessary care with a medical support cabinet that will follow his evolution. Regarding his visit to Spain, which was scheduled for December 11th and 12th, the person in charge explained that it has been set for February, without offering an exact date, while the one he planned to make on the 14th and 15th of this month to the Vatican to have an audience with Pope Leo XIV has also been postponed, although it has not yet been rescheduled. The Portuguese president underwent surgery on Monday night for an incarcerated hernia after being admitted to São João University Hospital after feeling unwell. Rebelo de Sousa, with a history of heart problems, is currently in the final stretch of his second term, which ends next year after the presidential elections to be held on January 18.
