Taipei.- A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of Taiwan this Wednesday, with no casualties or material damage reported so far, according to the Central Weather Bureau (
CWA) of Taiwan.
The earthquake occurred at 19:00 local time (11:00 GMT) at sea, specifically 69 kilometers south of the Hualien County Hall (east), at a depth of 30.9 kilometers, according to data collected by the CWA.
The tremor was felt across much of the island and registered its maximum intensity (5 out of 7) in the eastern county of Taidong, although it was also strongly felt in others such as Hualien or Nantou (4 out of 7).
This same region was the scene of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in April of last year that caused 18 deaths, more than 1,100 injuries and millionaire losses for the local economy.
Taiwan sits at the confluence of the Philippine and Eurasian plates, so earthquakes are frequent in this territory.
