Former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced this Monday her candidacy for the September 7 elections, running for the Third Electoral Section of the province of Buenos Aires, one of the most influential both for its political weight and its population density.
This district in the south of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area encompasses 19 municipalities, including La Matanza, Lomas de Zamora, Avellaneda, Quilmes, and Lanús, and has historically been a stronghold of Peronism, playing a strategic role in any provincial or national electoral contest.
In her statement, Fernández de Kirchner highlighted the importance of strengthening the representation of the conurbano: “The Third Section is underrepresented, like the entire Buenos Aires conurbano. You have to go to the place where you serve the most when it's opportune, betting on the advancement of the collective project.”
Furthermore, he indirectly questioned Governor Axel Kicillof's decision to separate the provincial elections, noting that “the Province was governed by Alfonsín supporters, Menem supporters, Duhalde supporters, Kirchner supporters, and Macri supporters, and it never separated.”
