Serbian Nemanja Matic, former player of Chelsea, Manchester United or Roma, returned this Tuesday to Italian football as the new signing of Sassuolo, a team recently promoted to the top category, for the next season.
"Sassuolo Calcio announces that it has formalized the signing of the footballer Nemanja Matić until June 30, 2026, with automatic renewal for the following season if certain contractual conditions are met," reported the 'neroverde' club.
The 37-year-old left midfielder played the last two seasons for the French Olympique Lyonnais, being one of the most important players on the team.
He began his career at Chelsea (2009-10), went through Vitesse (2010-11) and Benfica (2011-14), returned to Chelsea (2014-17), signed for United (2017-2022), played a season at Roma (2022-23) and was part of Rennes for a season (2023-24) before ending up at Lyon (2023-25).
In total, he has accumulated 251 matches in the Premier League, 107 matches in European competitions, 48 matches with the Serbian national team, and a record that includes 3 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup, 1 English League Cup, 1 Portuguese Championship, 3 Portuguese League Cups, and 1 Slovak Cup.
With Roma, under the orders of the Portuguese José Mourinho, with whom he coincided both at Chelsea and United, he reached the final of the Europa League, a competition that Sevilla won.
The Sassuolo, coached by Italian world champion Fabbio Grosso, won Serie B last season. This campaign, on the first matchday, the 'neroverdi' side faced Napoli, the reigning champions, and fell 0-2 at home with goals from the Scottish Scott McTominay and the Belgian Kevin De Bruyne.
