National: August 10th Anniversaries

  • 1843: Due to the persecutions in Santo Domingo by the president of Haiti, General Charles Riviere Hérard Aîné, Father Gaspar Hernández Morales and Fray Pedro Pamies leave for Curaçao.
  • 1866: President Gregorio Luperón orders the dissolution of the Auxiliary Board and convenes a National Convention to draft a Constitution and swear in the citizen elected President.
  • 1914: Representatives of the government of José Bordas Valdez and the opponents Horacio Vásquez and Juan Isidro Jimenes meet in Puerto Plata and agree to stop hostilities for 15 days to consider the peace proposal of the U.S. President, Thomas Woodrow Wilson.
  • 1962: The Government rejects the ultimatum of the Destrujillization Committee to cancel 15 officials and prosecutor Julio A. Cuello.
  • 1965: The OAS presents the “Act of Reconciliation” to the Constitutionalist and National Reconstruction governments, seeking to end the civil war that began on April 24.
  • 1994: The “Pact for Democracy” is signed in the National Palace by Joaquín Balaguer, José Fco. Peña Gómez and Lidio Cadet, reducing the presidential term to two years.
  • 1997: The 16 judges of the Supreme Court of Justice are sworn in, presided over by Jorge Subero Isa.
  • 2009: Diario Libre becomes the first newspaper in the world to offer CLIC2C/TEXT2C technology to interact with printed images.
  • 2010: The La Gran Vía store is closed for alleged tax evasion.
  • 2010: Dominican Republic and Brunei begin diplomatic and consular relations.
  • 2012: The International Court of Arbitration sentences the country to pay US$45 million to the Dominican Highway and Road Concessionaire.
  • 2016: Former Defense Minister Pedro Peña Antonio and Colonel Carlos Picini are arrested, linked to an alleged bribe in the purchase of eight Super Tucano aircraft.
  • 2020: Roberto Santana, former director of the New Penitentiary Model, criticizes the Nueva Victoria prison, calling it a “chicken coop” and a “triple corrupt business”.
  • 2022: The Public Heritage Recovery Team announces that it will demand the return of assets to the State in cases of corruption, even with plea agreements.
