Santo Domingo. – The political organizations Frente Amplio and Alianza País held an event this Sunday in which they strongly condemned the violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, carried out by the Government of the United States on January 3, events that they described as a serious transgression of international law and the Charter of the United Nations. During the event that took place in Bolivar Square, those present were encouraged with artistic expressions, a floral offering was laid to the liberator Simón Bolivar, María Teresa Cabrera presented the manifesto signed by both organizations while, Dr. Guillermo Moreno gave the closing remarks of the event. The organizations stated that the principles and norms of international law, which emerged after the two world wars, constitute a fundamental civilizational achievement for coexistence among sovereign states and an indispensable limit against the use of force, domination, and expansionism by the great powers.

"Any action by a State outside the international legal order lacks legality and legitimacy and must be repudiated by the international community," the manifesto states.

The Frente Amplio and Alianza Pais denounced the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, national deputy Cilia Flores, as an act of war, pointing out that this action violates the guarantees that protect heads of state and demanded their immediate release. They indicated that these events confirm a dangerous escalation that threatens regional and global peace.

Political organizations warned that the true motivation behind the aggression against Venezuela is the appropriation of its natural resources, taking the region back to colonial practices that were believed to be overcome. "The Venezuelan people are the sole and legitimate owners of their resources, and their exploitation must be aimed exclusively at the well-being of Venezuelans", it was underlined. They recalled that neither Venezuela, nor the Caribbean, nor Latin America are the backyard of any power, and that the peoples of the region conquered their independence and their right to self-determination more than two centuries ago. They also highlighted that the Dominican people know firsthand the consequences of the use of force, having suffered the U.S. military interventions of 1916 and 1965.

Finally, the manifesto called for preserving Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace and urged the Dominican State to refrain from participating in any action that threatens the sovereignty of another country, in line with the constitutional mandate that enshrines the principle of non-intervention as an invariable norm of Dominican international policy.
