Elon Musk recently stated that accelerated advances in artificial intelligence and robotics will completely transform the global economy in the next two decades. According to the entrepreneur, these technologies will reach such a high level of development that most productive tasks can be automated, which would make human work an optional activity.
Musk explained that, in that scenario, people will work only if they wish to, similarly to those who today practice a hobby or dedicate themselves to a creative activity for pleasure. He also maintained that the high efficiency of automated systems will allow the production of goods and services in abundance, reducing the weight of money in daily life to the point of making it practically irrelevant.
Although he acknowledges that the transition will not be immediate, Musk believes that society is heading towards a model where technology covers most of the basic needs, opening the door to a future in which economic survival does not depend on employment.
