Juan Pedro Franco, who held the Guinness World Record as the world's heaviest man, dies

Mexican Juan Pedro Franco Salas, known for having been the world's most obese man, died in the state of Aguascalientes, where he was from, at the age of 41, due to a kidney infection. In a statement, José Antonio Castañeda, the doctor who attended him, reported the death of the man who in 2017 obtained the Guinness record for being the heaviest human in the world at that time, weighing almost 600 kilos on the scale.

“In recent days, his health condition was compromised due to a kidney infection that evolved with systemic complications, which led to his death while he was hospitalized,” the specialist indicated.

In 2017, the then 32-year-old weighed about 595 kilos when he put himself in the hands of Castañeda, who subjected him to a Mediterranean diet that emphasizes vegetables and fruits and then performed two operations: a gastric sleeve and a gastric bypass. After that, Franco achieved a 49% reduction in his initial weight. In 2020, he managed to overcome a COVID-19 infection, an event that represented a high risk given his previous health condition and that reflected the impact of the improvement achieved in previous years and the successful completion of his bariatric process.
