Santo Domingo Norte. – Authorities identified Manuel Matos as the man who lost his life this Thursday after being swept away by the strong currents of a ravine in the El Manguito sector, of the municipality Santo Domingo Norte, during the downpours caused by Tropical Storm Melissa.
The information was confirmed by the mayor of the municipality, Betty Gerónimo, who deeply regretted the event and asked the population to remain cautious in the face of the rains.
"Unfortunately, we had a loss in the ravine of the El Manguito sector. A man with a disability, identified as Manuel Matos, went out and the current swept him away. He was found lifeless," explained Geronimo.

The mayor reiterated her call to the population, especially parents, to not allow children or adults to approach the ravines or play in the rain, as the currents can increase suddenly.
"We have to be aware. These rains are not a game. We must protect life and not put it at risk," he warned.
The body of Matos was recovered hours after the event by rescue brigades from the Civil Defense and community members of the area.
Meanwhile, the Santo Domingo Norte City Hall keeps more than 25 heavy equipment active in cleaning and sanitation work in different canals of the municipality, in coordination with CAASD, INAPA, Environment and the Economic Dining Halls, with the aim of avoiding further damage from the rains.
