Authorities in Russia have revoked the acquired citizenship of more than 2,800 people since April 2023, following the entry into force of the law that allows for the imposition of this punishment for various crimes.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, as reported this Wednesday, "2,875 citizenship revocation decisions" have been made so far.
The main reasons for withdrawing citizenship were the enforcement of court sentences for various crimes and evasion of military service by naturalized Russians.
According to Russian authorities, the measure allows countering various threats to national and public security.
This law provides for the withdrawal of acquired citizenship from people who commit "serious crimes against the State" and "discredit the Army" of Russia.

The first case was announced half a year after the approval of the law, when the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported the withdrawal of citizenship from two Russians, accused of possession and trafficking of drugs in large quantities.
Later, the authorities repeatedly reported on the application of the rule to naturalized Russians who evaded military service to avoid fighting in Ukraine.
