Save your skin from the dreaded Christmas hangover: secrets that really work

Glycation, a mechanism by which sugar molecules negatively affect skin tissues, represents one of the main challenges on the face after celebrations with excessive alcohol consumption. According to the consulted media, experts in dermocosmetics warned that both inflammation and the hardening of collagen fibers affect the structure and appearance of the skin, triggering visible consequences such as early wrinkles and loss of firmness. In this context, the relevant news indicates that after the holidays and the intake of alcoholic beverages, the skin shows evident signs of cutaneous deterioration, described by specialists as a cutaneous "hangover", which can persist beyond mere physical discomfort.

According to the analysis gathered by the media, the negative effects on the skin derived from alcohol are often underestimated compared to the traditional hangover symptoms, such as headache or general malaise. However, the statements of Raquel González, creator of the Byoode firm, indicate that the complexion, like other organs, suffers the internal consequences of nocturnal excesses, reflecting fatigue, swelling, and loss of luminosity. González explained that excessive alcohol consumption harms the rest process and, as a result, generates a dull face, with evident fatigue and edema affecting the facial contour.

The specialized media also collected contributions from Estefanía Nieto, dermocosmetics director of Medik8, who directly related the dehydration experienced after a night of partying with the evident skin dryness. Nieto stated in the publication that the skin, as well as the rest of the body, manifests a palpable "thirst", bearing the visible mark of the lack of hydration. Faced with this phenomenon, the experts cited by the media recommended prioritizing the replenishment of water both internally and through the topical application of products specifically formulated for this purpose, such as serums and masks with hyaluronic acid.

Patricia Garín, dermocosmetics manager at Boutijour, stated in the same media the importance of restoring hydration and restoring the natural glow to the face after episodes of dehydration induced by alcohol. From this perspective, formulations rich in humectant ingredients represent an essential tool to recover lost vitality and reverse the dull tone associated with a skin hangover.

The consulted media also offered recommendations on cosmetic treatments to be avoided in the days following excessive alcohol consumption. Mireia Fernández, dermocosmetic director of Perricone MD, warned in the publication that it is advisable to stay away from products that are too active, such as exfoliants, peelings, or strong acids. The reason is that these treatments can deepen inflammation and worsen dryness, aggravating the compromise of the skin barrier. Instead, she advised prioritizing formulas that include anti-inflammatory and soothing actives, capable of helping the skin restore its balance before resuming energizing treatments.

In the context of seeking facial luminosity, experts, according to the media report, suggested leaning towards ingredients like illuminating peptides and vitamin C, while discouraging the use of potentially aggressive acids during periods of greater skin sensitivity. Fernández stated in the consulted source that it is advisable to promote recovery with active ingredients that promote radiance without adding stress factors to skin already altered after excesses.

In the long term, the source gathered warnings about the persistent damage of alcohol to the skin's structure. González detailed in the media that glycation products generated by alcohol deteriorate the internal cutaneous architecture by fragmenting collagen fibers. This damage leads to a progressive decrease in firmness and favors premature facial aging. As a repair measure, González recommended using ingredients associated with DNA protection and skin regeneration, such as retinoids, growth factors, and peptides, as well as including hydroxy acids to support renewal, but avoiding their immediate application after days of intense alcohol consumption.

The comprehensive approach to counteracting skin "hangover" includes measures that go beyond topical cosmetics. Marta Agustí, nutritional director of Advanced Nutrition Programme, stated in the same publication that the integration of nutraceutical supplements can reinforce cosmetic results and skin recovery. According to her explanation, compounds such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids contribute to the maintenance of skin hydration from within, acting on the protective barrier and promoting facial texture in situations of dermal stress.

According to the media, the application of immediate cosmetic strategies, based on hydration and soothing agents, should be complemented by preventive routines focused on strengthening the skin's defense mechanisms throughout the year. Specialists highlighted that the success of the recovery process depends on adapting the care to the specific signs exhibited by the skin after excesses, avoiding counterproductive interventions and prioritizing restorative actions in both the short and long term. In this way, the well-being of the skin is directly linked to the way in which the effects derived from celebrations and festive habits involving alcohol consumption are addressed.
