Santo Domingo.- Journalists from different media outlets in the country raised their voices this Tuesday to reject the acts of aggression and threats that several of their colleagues have faced in the exercise of their work.

“We are here because of the attacks on our colleagues in the press, especially against photojournalists. We cannot tolerate this type of action; they are becoming very frequent,” said Jaime Rincón, a journalist from the newspaper El Nuevo Diario.

Professionals recalled that reporting is a constitutional right and an essential tool for democracy. They pointed out that acts such as pushing, obstruction of coverage, verbal intimidation, and stigmatizing speeches from positions of power attack not only journalists, but also the right of citizens to be informed.

“As journalists, we are concerned because in recent days members of the press have been assaulted by security personnel of public officials. That worries us, because it is assumed that a public official, as the name indicates, is a person open to scrutiny, and one as a journalist can approach him,” highlighted Osiris Mora, journalist from Telemicro.

Journalists and communicators called for the authorities of the State institutions to take control and ensure a clearer organization in public spaces, in order to avoid these types of incidents that directly affect the exercise of the press.
