"Cambita's Green Gold"; designation of origin to be used to promote avocado

Santo Domingo, R.D. – In the framework of the 2025 Agroalimentaria Fair, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM) and the Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) signed a strategic collaboration agreement to strengthen the capabilities of the agro-industrial sector, through training programs, technological innovation and institutional strengthening.

The agreement also contemplates technical and financial support to achieve the international accreditation of the Protected Designation of Origin "Oro Verde de Cambita", registered with ONAPI since 2016.  This process has a scientific basis aligned with the ISO 17025 standard, and seeks to consolidate the Cambita Avocado Cluster as a certifying entity of origin, quality, and traceability.

With this step, the Dominican avocado will not only gain recognition in global markets, but will become a symbol of territorial identity, rural development, and commercial differentiation based on international standards.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of MICM, Víctor -Ito- Bisonó, and the President of the Board of Directors of JAD, Roberto Serrano; and it contemplates the training of 3,000 agricultural producers in technological tools applied to agriculture and good governance practices, in partnership with the prestigious International School of Agroadministration (ISAM).

During the event, the president of the Cambita Avocado Cluster, José Isabel Rosa, also participated, highlighting the support that the MICM will provide to the international accreditation of the "Oro Verde de Cambita" Designation of Origin, a pioneering initiative in Latin America and the Caribbean that seeks to certify the quality and traceability of the avocado produced in that region, increasing its competitiveness in international markets.

“With this signature, we reaffirm our commitment to a more innovative, organized, and competitive agro-industrial ecosystem, capable of transforming the Dominican countryside into a sustainable source of collective well-being,” stated Minister Bisonó, emphasizing that this effort unites the State, the private sector, and academia around the same vision.

For his part, Roberto Serrano, representing the JAD, stated that “this agreement marks a milestone in the recent history of the Dominican agroindustry, as it puts the producer at the center of development with direct access to technologies, knowledge, and organizational structures that improve their competitiveness.”

Technical and associative training for rural development

One of the central pillars of the agreement is the implementation of two free training programs, executed jointly with ISAM: "Smart Agro", focused on the adoption of digital and smart technologies in agricultural production; and "Promotion of Associativity and Good Governance", aimed at strengthening organizational structures, collective decision-making, and the institutional sustainability of producer associations.

These trainings will bring Dominican farmers closer to the best international practices in agricultural administration, enhancing their productive capacities and improving their insertion into high value-added value chains.
