Republicans cite Biden's doctor to Congress for alleged "cover-up"

Washington.- The Republican caucus in Congress has summoned the doctor of former U.S. President Joe Biden to testify on June 27th regarding an alleged "cover-up" related to the health of the former Democratic president during his time in the White House, between 2021 and 2025.

James Comer, Chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, cited Kevin O'Connor to detail "his assessment and relationship" with the former president, recently diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

Biden's illness, 82 years old and whose health condition has been in the spotlight since the last electoral campaign, presents bone metastasis, which unleashed a wave of questions about whether the illness was hidden while he was president.

In a message this Friday on the social network X, Comer said he wants O'Connor to answer for the "alleged cover-up" of the "former president's mental deterioration."

The committee had already requested the doctor to appear for an interview, but his lawyers refused, citing medical ethics regulations. It is unclear whether O'Connor will be able to avoid appearing before Congress this time.

The criticisms focus on the results of the physical examination Biden underwent last year, in which the Democrat was described as a "healthy, active, and vigorous 81-year-old man, fit to successfully fulfill the duties of the presidency."

After the diagnosis was revealed, a Biden spokesperson assured that he or his team was unaware of having prostate cancer while occupying the Oval Office, after President Donald Trump hinted at speculation about a possible concealment of the disease.

"Why has it taken so long? It can take years to reach that level of danger. It's a very, very sad situation. I feel very bad about it and I think people should try to find out what happened," Trump said shortly after learning of Biden's illness.

This is not the first time Comer has cited O'Connor; last July, the congressman asked the doctor to appear at a public hearing to clarify his clinical evaluations of the former Democratic president, after a questionable performance in the face-off with Trump in which he was seen looking very deteriorated and hesitant, which ended up dynamiting his re-election campaign.

Comer has said that he will subpoena the former White House spokesperson Karine Jean Pierre.
