Washington.- A California review board denied parole to Erik Menéndez, one of the two brothers convicted of the shooting death of their parents in 1989 in Beverly Hills. Erik, sentenced to life in prison with his brother Lyle, received the negative ruling this Thursday in a 10-hour virtual hearing that included statements from the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office and many witnesses in the case who are considered victims of the crime, which turned 36 years old since its commission this August 20th. The only way out for Erik now, after the parole board's failure, is for the state governor to eventually decide to revoke the decision to grant him release from prison.

On Friday, the other brother, Lyle, will be heard by the parole board separately, but the ruling against his brother leaves a bad prognosis for his case. This sentence was reviewed last May by the US Justice Department and the sentence was reduced to between 50 years in prison and life imprisonment, allowing the possibility of requesting a hearing to be released from prison. The brothers were found guilty of the murder of their parents, Kitty and José Menéndez, which occurred on August 20, 1989, in their Beverly Hills home, in a controversial case in which the young men claimed to have suffered sexual abuse by their father. Initially, Erik and Lyle told the Police that they found their parents' lifeless bodies after spending the afternoon away from home, but they raised suspicions when they began a life of excess after accessing the family fortune. The case regained public notoriety with the successful Netflix series 'Netflix ‘Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menéndez’, which was followed by a documentary and the uproar caused by a new generation that looks with different eyes at those who were once considered ruthless killers.
