Organized by the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office in collaboration with the Muslim World League (MWL), the Second International Summit of Religious Leaders, with the theme "The Role of Religious Leaders in Resolving Conflicts," brought together 400 distinguished leaders and concluded on August 28, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur.
The participants strongly condemned the war and famine in Gaza, and urged governments and religious leaders around the world to take immediate action to stop the crisis and pressure the Israeli occupation authorities to comply with international law, guarantee the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, and establish their independent state in accordance with relevant international resolutions.
The summit reaffirmed its support for the final document of the High-level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, organized by Saudi Arabia and France at the UN in New York. Religious leaders pledged to mobilize their spiritual and social influence to garner support for this document. In his opening speech, the Hon. Dato' Sri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, highlighted that the Gaza crisis has revealed a profound loss of the international community's commitment to justice and humanity. He stated that all religions promote compassion and coexistence, and warned of the dangers of the "Clash of Civilizations" theories. For his part, the Hon. Dr. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, Secretary General of the Muslim World League, stated that the summit is being held at an exceptional moment in modern history, and emphasized that peace is not just an option, but a necessity for the survival of humanity and for the credibility of the United Nations Charter. He highlighted the fundamental role of religious leaders in shaping the conscience of societies and advancing universal human values. In addition, Dr. Al-Issa announced two initiatives: to strengthen the spiritual and moral function of religious leaders and to protect minorities in countries with religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity. In five sessions, the summit addressed crucial issues, such as conflicts for religious reasons and their root causes; the role of religious diplomacy in supporting peaceful agreements; and the tragedy of Gaza as an international failure. You may be interested in:At least 21,000 Gazan children have been disabled since the start of the war
