Hemato-Oncology Unit of the Arturo Grullón Pediatric Hospital celebrates 20 years with more than 1,200 interventions and 531 cancer patients cured

Santiago.- The Hemato-Oncology Unit of the Dr. Arturo Grullón Regional University Pediatric Hospital celebrated its twentieth anniversary this Tuesday, highlighting the advances achieved in the care and treatment of childhood cancer in the Cibao region. During the commemorative event, Dr. Luisa Collado, director of the unit, reported that in these 20 years, 1,247 surgical interventions have been performed on patients diagnosed with cancer, of which 531 managed to overcome the disease, a figure that represents significant progress in the fight against childhood cancer in the country. Collado explained that the unit has offered thousands of consultations in different areas, including dermatology, oncological surgery, palliative care, mental health, and oncological surveillance, providing comprehensive care supported by a multidisciplinary team committed to the health and well-being of children and adolescents facing cancer diagnoses. During the emotional event, several patients who overcame the disease shared their testimonies, including Robinson Stuven, from Moca; María Virgen, from Cabarete; and Stelin Martínez, from Puerto Plata, who expressed their gratitude to the medical staff and the Voluntariado Jesús con los Niños, an entity that has consistently supported the unit's work.

Dr. Collado highlighted the effort, dedication, and commitment of the medical staff, nursing staff, and volunteers, who, along with the patients' families, have made these positive results possible over the years. Also, the members of the Jesus with the Children Volunteer Group, including Tuty Almonte de Zouain, the communicator Brenda Sánchez and other representatives of the institution, reiterated their commitment to continue working for the children and to continue supporting the actions of the entity. The commemorative activity took place at the facilities of the Dominican Convention and Culture Center UTESA, with the participation of health authorities, doctors, representatives of allied institutions and family members of patients, who joined to celebrate two decades of hope, service and achievements for the benefit of children affected by cancer. Among those present were the governor of Santiago, Rosa Santos, the mayor Ulises Rodríguez, and other local authorities, who congratulated the medical team and the volunteers for their invaluable work in favor of children's health.
