COE keeps 24 provinces on alert due to the effects of Tropical Storm Melissa

Santo Domingo.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) increased to 24 the provinces on alert, 18 in yellow and 6 in green, due to the effect of tropical storm Melissa, which is located about 415 kilometers south/southwest of Barahona, the institution reported on Tuesday afternoon.

In this way, the provinces on yellow alert are: La Vega, San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, La Romana, Hato Mayor, San Pedro de Macorís, San José de Ocoa, Peravia, La Altagracia, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, San Juan, Pedernales, Azúa, Barahona, Monte Plata and El Seibo.

For their part, in green alert are: María Trinidad Sánchez, Bahoruco, Samaná, Santiago, Independencia and Elías Piña, indicated the COE on its X social media account. The tropical storm is moving west at about 24 km/h and "a slowdown of its translational movement is expected, followed by a movement towards the northwest and north, and has maximum sustained winds of about 85 km/h with higher gusts". The COE recommended refraining from crossing rivers, streams, and ravines that present high volumes of water in the provinces under alert. Also, on the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts, operators of fragile, small, and medium-sized vessels are advised to "remain in port due to wind, dangerous waves, as well as heavy showers and thunderstorms."
