Citizens of Las Galeras demand renovation of polyclinic in Arroyo el Cabo

Samaná.- Residents of the municipal district of Las Galeras gathered in the premises that previously housed the polyclinic of the Arroyo el Cabo sector, with the aim of demanding from the public health authorities the immediate intervention and renovation of the infrastructure, closed for several years. The building, which is in a state of progressive deterioration, stopped functioning as a primary care center and the medical services were moved to a rented house. However, the community members denounce that said house remains closed on crucial days such as weekends, which worsens the situation of access to health. Currently, the district has two polyclinics, both operating in rented houses for years, which has generated discomfort and concern among the population. Faced with the lack of official responses, residents warned that they will be forced to hold protests in the streets if a concrete solution is not offered. The community emphasizes that the distance to the Leopoldo Pou provincial hospital, located in the city of Samaná, more than 25 minutes away, represents an additional risk for patients in emergency situations.

In this context, the mayor of the municipal district, Ana Reyes, has been making efforts to achieve the construction of a first-level hospital to replace the polyclinic, considering the population growth and the health needs of Las Galeras. However, to date, this purpose has not been realized, which maintains the concern of the residents. Protesters made an energetic call to public health authorities to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Arroyo el Cabo facility and guarantee dignified and accessible medical services for all the inhabitants of Las Galeras.
