Abinader assures that Aerodom is "in the process" of paying the fine for the blackout at AILA

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader stated this Monday, during his meeting with the press in “La Semanal”, that the company Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) is “in the process of paying” the fine imposed for the blackout that occurred at Las Américas International Airport (AILA).

As explained, the company is "looking for the bureaucratic way" to complete the disbursement, information that, he said, was confirmed to him last week by the director of the Airport Department.

It is recalled that the Airport Commission imposed a fine of US$5 million on Aerodom after determining, in its preliminary report, that the electrical failure recorded in the north terminal of the AILA was caused by the collapse of medium voltage equipment and the unavailability of the backup system. The sanction also includes the obligation to assume the costs derived for passengers and airlines. Authorities from the Airport Department have explained that the process is advancing in coordination with Aerodom's legal team, which is studying the resolution that formalizes the sanction. So far, however, the transfer corresponding to US$5 million has not been finalized, due to the review of the procedures and compliance with the established legal requirements. The Airport Commission also instructed the concessionaire to implement improvements to the airport's electrical system, strengthen contingency protocols, and submit detailed technical reports on the fault. The agency determined that, despite the incident, there was no total loss of energy from the national grid and that the emergency plants were available, which reinforces the responsibility attributed to Aerodom.
