China supports Venezuela's request for an urgent UN Security Council meeting

Beijing (EFE).- The Chinese Government conveyed this Thursday its "support for Venezuela's request for an urgent meeting of the Security Council of the United Nations Organization (UN)" following the blockade announced by US President Donald Trump against the South American country.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated today at a press conference that "it opposes all unilateral intimidation and supports all countries in safeguarding their sovereignty and national dignity." Guo asserted that "Venezuela has the right to independently develop mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries." "The international community understands and supports Venezuela's position in protecting its legitimate rights and interests," the spokesperson added.

Venezuela requested an urgent meeting

Venezuela requested this Wednesday an urgent meeting with the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) following the blockade announced by Trump, the Foreign Ministry in Caracas reported.

This Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke by phone with his Venezuelan counterpart, Yván Gil, to whom he conveyed China's support amid growing US measures against the government of Nicolás Maduro. Trump announced this week the "total blockade" against sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, in a significant escalation of the military deployment that began last August in the waters of the Caribbean Sea under the argument of combating drug trafficking, but which Caracas considers seeks to bring about a change of regime. In recent weeks, Beijing has condemned US actions, which it accuses of "interference" in Venezuela's internal affairs.
