A magnitude 6.6 earthquake shook the coast of Taiwan

Washington .- A strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake shook the Philippine Sea on Saturday night, near Taiwan, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake occurred at 11:05 p.m. local time (03:05 GMT), about 60 kilometers northwest of Taipei City, according to data from the agency. For its part, the USGS indicated that the movement occurred at an approximate depth of between 67 and 72.8 kilometers, which caused strong tremors in the northern and eastern regions.

Taiwan, a zone with frequent earthquakes

Taiwan  is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, in the area of interaction between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, a collision that accumulates a lot of tension and causes frequent earthquakes.

Furthermore, in the last ten years, at least three earthquakes of magnitude 6.6 or higher have been recorded within a 300-kilometer radius of this epicenter, including the devastating magnitude 7.4 event that shook the Hualien area on April 3, 2024, with at least 19 fatalities, over a thousand injuries, extensive structural damage, and a small local tsunami on the east coast.
