Underground bunker of the Mara MS-13 dismantled in northern Honduras

The finding, the result of an investigation by the Public Ministry and the Criminal Investigation Technical Agency (ATIC), has opened a new line in the fight against criminal organizations that use mountainous and difficult-to-access areas to safeguard weapons and large quantities of alleged drugs, according to the official report. Currently, the place remains under surveillance and the investigation is kept confidential, while the authorities anticipate that in the coming days information will be expanded on the amount of drugs seized, the type of weapons seized and the possible connection of these events with other criminal activities in Cortés. The actions in Omoa are not isolated. The Public Ministry reported that the operation responds to a follow-up after the escape of several members of a criminal structure, days ago, in San Pedro Sula. We recommend reading: In that episode, members of the Mara Salvatrucha escaped aboard a bus, allegedly with evidence linked to crimes under investigation. The information gathered allowed for the identification of safe houses and, consequently, the deployment of an operation that included intelligence and surveillance work in various areas of the department.

The dismantled bunker was camouflaged among the vegetation of the Vida Nueva sector, about 25 kilometers from the urban center of Omoa. The characteristics of the terrain made access difficult and forced the agents to move on foot with tools and protective equipment. The space was not visible at first glance and had discreet access points that made its external detection difficult.

Within the site, the ATIC and the Military Police of Public Order located numerous underground caches. The authorities specified that these compartments contained red packages with alleged drugs, as well as firearms and ammunition. The discovery was possible thanks to the support of the Military Police canine squad, whose dogs marked the points where the agents began to excavate. The evidence was counted, packaged, and transported under custody to facilities of the Public Ministry, where it will be subjected to technical expert assessments. The exact nature and weight of the seized substance will be determined, as well as its origin and possible destination. Ballistic analyses will also be carried out on the weapons with the aim of establishing whether they were used in crimes in the northern area of the country. So far, authorities have not specified the total amount of packages seized or the exact type of drug, but they did confirm that it is a considerable amount. No arrests were reported during the operation, which is still under the direction of specialized units focused on tracking the criminal structure indicated.

This procedure is one more in a series of interventions aimed at identifying and dismantling clandestine storage centers, routes and hideouts used by criminal groups to hide illicit substances and weapons. "The dismantling of clandestine storage centers is part of the strategy to weaken the logistics of criminal structures operating in the northern region of the country," communicated the Public Ministry. The interventions, which usually last for several hours due to the geographical complexity, allow the authorities to secure the perimeter, prevent escape attempts, and verify that there are no additional hiding places. All the material seized during the operation will become part of the open investigation, aimed at establishing responsibilities and possible links with other criminal networks active in Cortés
