Government authorities in Samaná coordinate responses to rainfall that affected Las Terrenas

Relief organizations, municipal and provincial authorities are carrying out the surveys, which are estimated to have caused millions in losses. Samaná. - Provincial governor Teodora Mullix Geraldino reported that the Dominican Government immediately activated an inter-institutional assistance plan to assist families affected by the intense rains recorded in the last hours in the municipality of Las Terrenas. During an evaluation meeting with municipal authorities, the representative of the Executive Branch in the province explained that the central government, in coordination with the city council, deployed support through the Directorate of Social and Community Food Assistance and the Supérate program, as well as the Administrative Ministry of the Presidency and PROPEP. Mullix Geraldino indicated that Supérate is awaiting a possible declaration of emergency by the city council, which would allow the activation of special social assistance mechanisms for the most vulnerable households. Meanwhile, DASAC began the installation of mobile kitchens and, together with the Governorate, the delivery of 450 rations of raw food, prioritizing according to the level of affectation.

The governor highlighted that the phenomenon occurred unexpectedly, as the province was not under alert, according to INDOMET maps, and reiterated the government's commitment, representing President Luis Abinader, to offer an efficient and timely response. For his part, Mayor Eduardo Esteban Polanco (Willy) reported that some 200 homes were affected, mainly in the communities of La Granja, Caño Seco, La Ceiba, Abra Grande, Barrio Codestel and the Hospital area. He explained that the immediate actions included the activation of shelters, the preventive mobilization of families, the cleaning and viability of roads, as well as the intervention of rivers and beaches to remove debris. The mayor pointed out that the city council is evaluating, together with the Council of Aldermen, the possibility of declaring the municipality in a state of emergency, which would facilitate a more agile response from national institutions. Present at the event were José Acosta, DASAC's deputy director; Damelia Zapata, national deputy director of Supérate; Carolina Mateo, provincial coordinator of DASAC; and councilors Wanifer Díaz and Yamil Adames, who supported the measures taken to mitigate the effects of the rains and protect the affected population .
