Santo Domingo. President Luis Abinader affirmed this Monday that, although the new Penal Code is not perfect or ideal, it represents an important advance in the fight against crime, against a legal system that he described as obsolete. During his participation in La Semanal con la Prensa, the president maintained that the legislative piece is "perfectible", but necessary given the reality of a country where many repeat offenders remain at large due to the weaknesses of the old legal framework, in force for more than 140 years.

"No law is perfect, no law is ideal. It is perfectible, it is improvable, but it is a Penal Code in which there have been advances. Perhaps it is not the one I would like, but there have been advances," expressed the Head of State.

Abinader cited as an example cases in which individuals with multiple criminal records have remained on the streets, due to the lack of stricter legal tools to effectively sanction them. "There have been criminals who are residents and have committed three and four crimes, and they are on the street because we have an outdated and imperfect code. Those criminals are the ones who bring pain to families, and they needed a code that would toughen penalties and bring more justice to criminality," he maintained.
