The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, but was discovered on Saturday morning, when the deceased's sister, María Estefani Cruz Familia, went to the place after failing to communicate with Esmeralda and confirming that she had not arrived at her destination in Las Matas de Farfán, San Juan, where she was from. According to the sister's account to the authorities, she had accompanied her to a medical appointment that same day, as Esmeralda was preparing to travel in the afternoon. When she didn't hear from her at night, she became alarmed and went to the house. Upon finding the door locked and receiving no answer, she asked for help to break it down. Upon entering, he found the lifeless bodies. According to the National Police report, the murder weapon was a 9-millimeter Browning pistol, which Díaz Otaño was carrying illegally. A neighbor identified as Josefina, who resides near the place, commented that the couple had moved in about two months ago. She stated that although she saw them enter separately in their respective vehicles, she never perceived signs of conflict between them. He added that someone heard a shot, but thought it was an explosion in the air. By Sunday afternoon, the residence was already empty and the bodies had been moved to Las Matas de Farfán, where they would be waked. Meanwhile, in the sector, an apparent normality reigned, with children playing in the alley and neighbors chatting in a nearby grocery store, just meters from where the tragedy occurred.
