Jerusalem.- The total death toll in the devastated Gaza Strip from Israeli bombings reached 58,573 this Wednesday, while indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas continue in an initial phase in Doha.
"The number of deaths from the Israeli aggression has risen to 58,573 martyrs (dead) and 138,607 injured since October 7, 2023," reported in a statement the Ministry of Health of the Hamas Government in the enclave.
In the last 24 hours alone, at least 94 people died and more than 252 were injured, according to the hospital count published today by the Ministry of Health.
Most deaths in Gaza were due to asphyxiation
Furthermore, so far this Wednesday, at least 40 Palestinians lost their lives in Gaza, including 20 who died in a stampede near a distribution center for aid managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The GHF, backed by Israel and the U.S. but questioned by the UN, attributed what happened to the presence of "armed people affiliated with Hamas" within the crowd and said that 19 people died from being trampled and one was stabbed. You may be interested in: Israel kills at least 20 Palestinians in attacks since dawn against the Gaza Strip
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health said that most of the dead died of asphyxiation "as a result of tear gas fired at the hungry people and the subsequent stampede at the US distribution center." Meanwhile, in Doha, indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas continue. The current proposal contemplates a 60-day truce, after which both parties must negotiate a transition to a permanent ceasefire.
