Los Ángeles (EE.UU.).- Murders reported in the United States decreased by 14.9% in 2024 compared to the previous year's figures, revealed this Tuesday a report from the FBI, which highlights a decrease in the general category of violent crimes in the country in the last year of the term of former President Joe Biden.
The detailed analysis of more than 14 million criminal offenses reported in 2024 showed that a violent crime was committed last year, on average, every 25.9 seconds. This represented a decrease of 4.5% compared to the estimates for 2023.
When breaking down the categories, federal authorities found that, on average, a murder was committed every 31.1 minutes and a rape every 4.1 minutes, which represented a decrease of 14.9% and 5.2%, respectively.
Aggravated assault figures also decreased in 2024 by 3.0% compared to the previous year. Robbery showed an estimated decrease of 8.9% nationwide.
Incidents of hate crimes reported decreased by 1.5%, from 11,041 in 2023 to 10,873 in 2024. However, the report showed that there are still alarming levels of hate crimes directed against African Americans, the LGBTQ+ community, and religious minorities, as highlighted this Tuesday by Southern Poverty Law Center.
The organization sounded the alarm due to the budget cuts presented by the government of the American president, Donald Trump, for 2026 for training programs and prevention of hate crimes.
