Caracas.- Police and military personnel from Venezuela seized 2.8 tons of marijuana in Zulia state, bordering Colombia, as part of the deployment they have maintained for months to combat drug trafficking and amid the agreement recently established with the U.S. to fight in this matter.
"2.8 tons of marijuana seized in Zulia state. After intelligence work, officials from the Strategic Operations Corps, National Anti-Drug Command of the Bolivarian National Guard and the support of the Bolivarian National Police found 107 bales", said the state channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV) in a Telegram message on Tuesday.

The seizure took place in the Guajira municipality thanks to a "arduous" investigation work between the security forces, added VTV without specifying when the seizure was made. The state channel shared images of GNB and Police officials unearthing large packages in a sandy and apparently desolate area. Venezuela seized around 70 tons of drugs in 2025, as indicated in December by the Minister of Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabello. The country maintained a broad combat deployment against drug trafficking during the second half of the year amid the United States military deployment in the Caribbean, which accused President Nicolás Maduro of allegedly leading a drug trafficking network and which Caracas denounced as a plan to overthrow the Government. On January 3rd of this year, the United States captured Maduro in a military attack in Caracas and three other nearby states, and after his detention established approaches with the now acting president, Delcy Rodríguez. Venezuela and the United States agreed on February 19 to jointly combat drug trafficking in the region and terrorism, during a meeting in Caracas between the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, and the head of the US Southern Command, Francis Donovan, as reported at the time by the Venezuelan Minister of Communication, Miguel Ángel Pérez Pirela.
