Santo Domingo. – Dominican baseball is in mourning after learning of the death of Gustavo Talmaré, a 14-year-old prospect, who lost his life this Saturday, August 16, due to drowning in a lagoon near the academy where he trained, as confirmed by ESPN Digital.
In the 2023 U-12 World Cup, he had a batting average of .471, three home runs and seven RBIs, as well as a slugging percentage of 1.084, being included in the ideal team of the competition. His talent and charisma had projected him as one of the great promises of Dominican baseball with a view to the Major Leagues.

Talmaré had become one of the most striking promises of the country thanks to his outstanding performance in the first edition of the Caribbean Series Kids 2024, where he was chosen Most Valuable Player, in addition to shining in the U-12 Baseball World Cup 2023, in which he was the most outstanding Dominican. Amaurys Nina, coach and owner of the academy where the young baseball player was developing, confirmed the sad news: “I was devastated to learn about it. The body was recovered by a rescue organization, but I still don't understand what it was doing there. The authorities are investigating what happened,” he declared. The death was also confirmed by Valentín Contreras Núñez, a member of the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) and coordinator of the Quisqueyan team in the 2024 Caribbean Series Kids, who expressed his pain through social media. According to the preliminary report of the Dominican National Police, Talmaré died of asphyxiation by immersion (drowning). The document indicates that the teenager would have fallen into the Laguna del Toro, in Guerra, while looking for fruits.
