Dajabón.- Santiago Riverón, mayor of the border municipality of Dajabón, described as an aberration the alleged project of the National Council for Children (CONANI) to install a shelter for Haitian children in irregular migratory condition who wander the streets of the town.
The municipal executive, who is promoting a campaign to reclaim public spaces occupied by Haitian minors in street situations, denounced that this initiative would undermine national sovereignty. Riverón assured that he will not allow the installation of the refugee center in his municipality, categorizing it as an attack against the Dominican people.
"We cannot allow a reception center to be established in our territory, because that is equivalent to a refugee camp, we do not agree," argued the mayor.

Dajabón has no Dominican children living on the streets
Riverón called on the Dominican population to remain vigilant to avoid what he calls an "aberration" in the territory. "What the authorities and CONANI should do is take those Haitian children, take them to the bridge, and repatriate them to their territory so that their parents can receive them. We do not have Dominican children on the streets," the representative of the border municipality emphatically stated.
He states that upon allowing a shelter for Haitian children, "all Haitian children will cross the border and enter that so-called center," said Riverón.Finally, he indicated that Dominican children are in their homes under the care of their parents and that Haitian children should be in their territory, not on the streets of Dajabón committing all kinds of vandalism.
