The Confederation of Commerce of Provisions and SMEs of the Dominican Republic (Confecomercio) expressed its concern about the price increases that are being recorded for basic products of the family basket, ranging from 5% to 60%.
In that sense, Gilberto Luna, president of Confecomercio, said that the inflation and price increase that has been recorded in the country's economy does not stop.
He regretted that the prices of the basic basket continue to rise, without the authorities of Industries, Commerce and Mipymes and the Ministry of Agriculture acting on the matter.
He indicated that last week's increase in the price of ground coffee was 16%, the second increase in recent months.
Also the banana, this one registered an increase of more than 50%, being sold in some places in the country for more than 45 pesos each.
Same with cassava, which has increased by 60%, selling to the consumer at 40 pesos per pound.
Luna pointed out that other price increases that have occurred in recent days are those of chicken broths, by 25%, canned coconut beans by 10%, onions by 15%, herring by 5%;
The price of potatoes and other agricultural products has also increased.
Luna said that merchants organized in federations and associations are not responsible for price increases, because they have to resign themselves to paying more for the products when the price increases occur.
"We have a lazy government, where the authorities do not care about solving the problems of the population," said the commercial leader.
