The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, announced this Saturday (01.17.2026) that he received an invitation from the US President, Donald Trump, to join as a founding member of the "peace council" for Gaza announced last Thursday, which according to Washington will address issues such as "strengthening governance capacity, regional relations, reconstruction, attracting investment, large-scale financing and capital mobilization".
When sharing an image of the invitation letter to join the Executive Board for Peace for Gaza, Milei wrote on X (Twitter) that it will be "an honor" to accompany the initiative chaired by Trump himself "to promote lasting peace in regions affected by conflicts, starting with the Gaza Strip." The instance also includes the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
"I can say with certainty that it is the largest and most prestigious council ever assembled at any time and place," the U.S. president said on social media when making the announcement. The ultraliberal Milei, an ally of Trump in the region, wrote that "Argentina will always be on the side of countries that fight head-on against terrorism, that defend life and property, and that promote peace and freedom."You can also read: Student stabs 18-year-old classmate after argument over a young woman
Second phase
Milei's link with Trump began before the American's assumption to his second presidential term and grew during 2025, when the United States Treasury supported Argentina amid financial difficulties, in addition to Trump's discursive intervention in support of the Argentine president a few weeks before the midterm elections.
