Montevideo, Uruguay.- The former president of Uruguay, José “Pepe” Mujica, 89 years old, is going through the terminal phase of esophageal cancer and remains at his farm in Rincón del Cerro, where he receives palliative care to cope with the pain.

This was confirmed this weekend by his wife, former Vice President Lucía Topolansky, who explained that the objective now is to guarantee him quality of life in this final stretch.

“We are doing what is necessary so that he lives this last passage of his life as well as possible”, said Topolansky in statements to the local radio Sarandí.

It is recalled that in January of this year, Mujica announced that the esophageal cancer he suffers from had spread to his liver and stated that he was not willing to receive any more treatments. "My body can't take it," he said in an interview with the local press.

At the end of April 2024, the former president announced that he was suffering from a tumor in the esophagus and a few days later clinical tests revealed that it was a localized cancer. Between May and June 2024, he received 31 radiotherapy sessions to treat the disease. It was a complex clinical picture, given that Mujica has suffered from an immunological disease for more than two decades, as well as vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels) and severe kidney failure.

The last time Mujica was seen at a massive event was in October 2024, when he unexpectedly appeared at the closing campaign event of the Movimiento de Participación Popular, his political sector, a few days before the presidential elections.
