Sánchez calls on the EU to immediately suspend its association agreement with Israel

Brussels, June 26 (EFE).- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez demanded this Thursday that the European Union (EU) immediately suspend the association agreement it has with Israel, considering that it is "more than evident" that this country is violating respect for human rights in Gaza.

Upon his arrival at the European Council meeting in Brussels, Sánchez, in statements to journalists, said he will make this request to the rest of the leaders at this meeting.

She recalled that the High Representative for EU Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, echoed a report by the human rights rapporteur in which he spoke of Israel possibly violating Article two of the association agreement regarding respect for human rights.

"What makes no sense is that we have imposed 18 packages of sanctions on Russia for its aggression against Ukraine and Europe, in a double standard, and are not even able to suspend an association agreement when Article Two on respect for human rights is being flagrantly violated," he stressed.

Sánchez recalled that Spain has been continuously calling for a solution to the situation in Gaza and has even presented a resolution to the UN General Assembly along with the Palestinian National Authority, which was supported by a majority to call for an end to the war and access to humanitarian aid.

It also urged progress on the path to the two-state solution, which the Spanish government considers the only possible one.
