Magnitude 3.0 earthquake shakes New York and eastern New Jersey

New York. – An earthquake in New Jersey of magnitude 3.0 shook the New York metropolitan region on Saturday night, as confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located northeast of Hasbrouck Heights, in Bergen County, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The tremor occurred around 10:18 p.m. (local time) and was briefly felt in several areas of Bergen County, Westchester County, and parts of New York City. So far, no property damage or injuries have been reported. The New York City Emergency Management Office (NYCEM) indicated that it is "monitoring and investigating reports of the earthquake in New Jersey," while recommending that residents check their homes for potential hazards such as fallen objects, debris, or structural cracks. "Prepare for possible aftershocks. These can occur minutes, hours, or even days after the initial earthquake," authorities noted. They also reminded that no immediate protective measures are required unless visible damage has occurred.

Other recent tremors

This earthquake in New Jersey occurs a few weeks after a magnitude 1.6 tremor recorded near Morris Plains, in Morris County. In addition, another 3.6 magnitude earthquake was reported in the region on the same Saturday, while last Thursday a 4.4-magnitude earthquake affected Southern California.

In the global context, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.8 recently shook the Russian Far East, in the Kamchatka Peninsula, considered one of the six strongest recorded in modern history, according to the USGS. Although earthquakes are not common on the east coast of the United States, authorities reminded that the region is not completely free of moderate seismic activity.
