India Post temporarily suspends its shipments to the United States due to changes in tariff regulations

The India Post Department has announced the temporary suspension of all postal shipments to the United States with a value exceeding $100 due to the inability of companies to adapt to the regulatory changes imposed by the Trump Administration's tariff policies.

'The Postal Department has decided to temporarily suspend the reservation of all types of postal items destined for the US starting August 25, 2025, except for letters, documents, and gift items with a maximum value of 100 dollars,' the Indian Ministry of Communications indicated in a statement.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has decided to suspend the well-known 'minimis' regime, through which all those goods with a cost of less than 800 dollars were exempt from paying tariffs.

For this reason, those shipments that exceed this price will now have to pay taxes. The problem stems from the collection and management of these fees and the uncertainty generated about which entities and companies should be in charge of doing so and in what way.

'While the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued certain guidelines on August 15, 2025, several critical processes related to the designation of authorized entities and the mechanisms for collecting and settling tariffs remain undefined,' reads the statement from the Indian government.

Indian airlines have expressed their inability to accept orders bound for the United States due to a lack of 'technical and operational capacity'.

'The Department is closely monitoring the evolution of the situation in coordination with all stakeholders and every effort is being made to normalize services as soon as possible,' the note reports.

MULTIPLE INTERNATIONAL SUSPENSIONS

The Indian postal service has been one more to join the cascade of temporary suspensions that different entities and postal companies in many countries have decided to impose on goods destined for the North American country due to the regulatory confusion generated by the end of the 'minimis' regime.

The Spanish public company Correos will impose this halt on shipments, like the Indian service, starting Sunday, August 24 at 11:59 p.m. Something that the Spanish company has assured will have a 'significant' impact on international postal logistics and e-commerce flows.

PostNL (Netherlands), DHL and Deutsche Post (Germany), Postnord (in the Nordic countries) and Poste Italiane (Italy), among many other operators, have joined the temporary halt of shipments to the United States with prices exceeding 800 dollars until the regulations are clarified.
