Hato Mayor.- An English teacher was injured with a bladed weapon in the leg after intervening in a fight between two students at the Catarey Adentro Primary School, located in the El Almendro sector, in Sabana de la Mar, Hato Mayor province.

The teacher, identified as Darlenys Cordero, 32 years old, reportedly tried to prevent one of the students from attacking another with a knife, at which point she ended up injured. Cordero was taken to a private medical center, where she received stitches and was later sent home with several days of medical leave. Her injury, although delicate, did not compromise her life.

Following the incident, teachers at the school reported a growing sense of insecurity within the educational center. They stated that they are frequently threatened by students, which has generated fear among the teaching staff.

Educators attribute much of the problem to the presence of students who are overage, some between 15 and 18 years old, attending 4th, 5th, and 6th grade of primary school. According to reports, these youths do not show academic interest and tend to intimidate both the younger students and the teachers. "These students don't come to learn, but to cause disorder and distract those who do want to study," expressed a teacher under the condition of anonymity. The educational staff demanded an urgent intervention by the Educational District and the Ministry of Education, warning that the situation could lead to more serious events if action is not taken in time.
