SANTO DOMINGO. – The manager of the Dominican Republic national team for the World Baseball Classic, Albert Pujols, announced that Emilio Bonifacio and Robinson Canó will not be considered for the roster that will compete in the tournament, a decision based on the new competitive direction he intends to establish for the tricolor team.

During his participation in the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida, Pujols explained that, although both veterans have had brilliant careers and valuable contributions to Dominican baseball, the team requires more dynamic profiles and adapted to the current demands of the tournament.

"We must take advantage of every roster spot with players who can make an impact right now," the manager said when asked by the media.

Pujols highlighted that players like Elly de la Cruz and Johan Rojas offer a combination of athleticism, defense, and speed that better fits the style of play he seeks to implement. He also pointed out that Cano's cycle in the selection has concluded and that it is time to give way to a new generation. The leader was firm in stating that decisions are not made based on popularity, but on competitiveness.

"The goal is to win. The fans are pleased when we lift the trophy, not when we fill the roster out of obligation," he expressed clearly.

He assured that his position does not intend to diminish the merits or respect for the veterans, whom he considers fundamental figures in the history of Dominican baseball, although he acknowledged that the renewal process could generate conflicting opinions.

New approach for the Dominican team

Pujols stated that his mission is to form a young, athletic group prepared to face international powers in the Classic, without looking back or relying on sentimentality. The foreman attended the Winter Meetings as part of the Dominican delegation that also announced the two preparation games against the Detroit Tigers, scheduled for March 3 and 4 at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium.
