The music and fantasy story that surprised the world audience will have a continuation. This Thursday, the Netflix platform officially confirmed that it has greenlit a sequel to the successful animated film KPop Demon Hunters, known in Spanish as Las guerreras K-pop. According to a company statement, the new project will once again be led by its original creators, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who will once again take the helm of the universe that combines Korean pop music with supernatural adventures. The sequel will also be the first project to emerge from the exclusive multi-year agreement that both filmmakers signed with Netflix to develop and direct animated productions. "With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris not only reached the audience, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres," said Netflix's content director, Bela Bajaria. In statements to Tudum, the executive stated that the company is "incredibly proud to deepen our collaboration with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans around the world."

The Return of the Demon Hunter Stars

The first film, released in June 2025 and produced in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation, follows HUNTR/X, a fictional female K-pop group that leads a double life: while filling stadiums and dominating music charts, its members also secretly fight against demonic forces that threaten their fans.

The protagonists —Rumi, Mira, and Zoey— must face an unexpected threat: a popular rival boyband known as the Saja Boys, who are actually disguised demons planning to take over the souls in the city. The hybrid concept of musical, fantasy, and pop culture proved to be a resounding success. According to data released by Netflix, the film surpassed 500 million views on the platform since its release and became the most popular film in the history of the streaming service. The success was the same in the musical sphere: the fictional group HUNTR/X became the first K-pop girl group to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, while the song “Golden” won a Grammy Award and accumulated multiple accolades. It hasn't been the only ceremony in which KPop Demon Hunters has stood out. The animated film was also nominated in two categories at the Oscars: best animated film and best original song for “Golden”. According to the Academy, the song will be performed during the gala this Sunday, March 15, with a staging that will fuse traditional Korean instruments and contemporary choreography. In total, the film also accumulated 13 nominations for the Annie Awards, the most important awards in animation cinema. For its creators, the announcement of the sequel on the red N giant represents a golden opportunity to continue exploring the narrative universe of K-pop warriors.I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more of this Korean story and our Korean characters,” Kang declared in a statement released by Netflix. “There is much more in this world we have built and I am excited to show it to you. This is just the beginning.”

When will the sequel be released?

Although the platform has not yet announced an official release date for the new film, previous industry reports suggest that the project could take several years to reach the screen.

According to Bloomberg in 2025, Netflix and Sony had considered a possible release around 2029, a common schedule for large-scale animated productions. Sony executives have also indicated that the development of the sequel will require a prolonged time due to the complexity of the creative process.
