Alba Nely Familia: “Being a member of the SIP Board of Directors is a great commitment”

Punta Cana.- The director of CDN, channel 37, Alba Nely Familia, expressed her gratitude to the media for the coverage provided during the 81st General Assembly of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), held at The Westin hotel in Punta Cana, and reaffirmed her commitment to continue working in favor of freedom of expression and the strengthening of independent journalism in the region.

“Thank you for the great coverage you have provided at this 81st General Assembly of the SIP. The challenge is always to continue supporting countries and journalists where freedom of the press is not as complete as we have in the Dominican Republic,” he affirmed.

Family advocated for the need to remain vigilant in the face of the speeches and actions of some governments that limit the free exercise of journalism.

“As highlighted in the assembly's conclusions, we must continue to closely observe the discourse of many presidents who mistreat the press and do not allow journalism to develop or fulfill its true vocation of service, which is the defense of democracy,” he noted.

The director of CDN highlighted that the Inter American Press Association is a comprehensive organization, committed to both journalists working under risk and those operating in contexts of greater freedom.

“We are making a great effort to support those who cannot practice journalism freely, but also those who do, offering them digital training and tools that strengthen the sustainability of their media," he indicated.

Family also highlighted the Awards for Journalistic Excellence and the recognitions granted to professionals who have dedicated their lives to the defense of freedom of the press, as a sample of the solidarity and commitment spirit that characterizes the SIP.

“The Inter American Press Association has always been focused on those two essential commitments: protecting journalists at risk and strengthening free and independent media”, he affirmed.

Reflecting on her role within the hemispheric organization, Alba Nely Familia recalled that she was a member of the SIP's Board of Directors during the 2022-2023 period, and that from the beginning she assumed an active role in the organization of the meeting held in the Dominican Republic.

"Being a member of the SIP Board of Directors is a great commitment that I will continue to assume, delivering my work and effort so that this organization continues to support the free press in the world," he concluded.
