Congresswoman and therapist Altagracia de los Santos calls for protecting children, especially from close relatives

Santo Domingo, R.D. — Within the framework of the celebration in November of Family Month, congresswoman and sexual and couples therapist, Altagracia de los Santos, during her Friday segment on the program Politikal addressed the importance of emotional and mental health while making an urgent call to parents to assume full responsibility for raising their children and issued a serious warning about the risks of blindly trusting close relatives. During the call to protect minors, the legislator and psychologist recounted a case of an aunt who was left in the care of her niece and abused her, reiterating that "danger lies in trust" and that children should be protected even from close relatives. De los Santos emphasized that family is not defined only by biology, but by strong emotional, legal or biological bonds, where support, responsibilities and care are given: "The family is considered the cross-cutting axis of society where principles and good customs are formed".
The therapist emphasized that values are primarily developed at home, not in schools or universities. Children, she warned, replicate the behaviors they observe: "children do what they see you do and repeat what they hear you say". Therefore, if a child expresses themselves or acts in a strange or distraught manner, parents should investigate their immediate environment to determine where they learned it.

The specialist highlighted that some parents do bad things and then try to compensate or "buy their conscience" with gifts, but true love is defined by empathy, sharing, and the way they get along as a family. The most forceful recommendation from Altagracia de los Santos was regarding the safety of minors, urging parents not to trust anyone, including the family circle.
